Making Friends with Time

by Keith Beasley

Of all the challenges we face in this human life, time is perhaps one that many of us struggle with most . . . we never seem to have enough . . . earthly time, that is!

The truth is, we actually have all the time in the Universe . . . or maybe all the time in the multi-verse! So why do we so often seem to be fighting it?!

Where we came from, the Source of our spiritual self, is beyond time. God, we know, is eternal. Our soul knows this. Within us, our highest self remembers a sense of timelessness. Our spiritual home has no beginning, no end. There is no past, no future, only an eternal now . . . a time/place/sense of the deepest peace and love. And we'd rather like to be back there!

Contrast that with the three dimensional, linear time world in which most humans live . . . at least in so called 'civilised' or developed societies. As for the more primitive or rural based communities, they don't seem to suffer as much. Not surprising since when we work in tune with daylight and the seasons then we are at least acknowledging the power of time.

It all started going wrong when we invented the clock. The very notion that time is something we can measure is a clear sign of man's intelligence giving him ideas above his station. How arrogant to think that we're above the fundamentals of life! As the industrial revolution got into swing, the rot really set in. Not only measure time but control it . . . or at least attempt to control our life against our measured time. Sorry folks, but it's unreal, unnatural! The reason you have trouble with time is that you don't respect it. Even Lewis Carroll’s Mad Hatter knew that! He knew that the only 'time for Tea' is Tea-Time. Who needs a clock to tell you that!

Time, Time, Time . . . there’s no man can command

Seek not to conquer time . . .

and time will vanish in your hand

Our science fiction writers too have a more healthy view of time. They know that the seconds marked out by Cesium atoms or Big Ben are but a small part of the truth. They know that space-time is far from linear or predictable. How often has the Star Trek Enterprise or Voyager strayed through a worm hole into a parallel world or passed into a time warp?

And aren't these other dimensions of time the same 'place' that yogis go to in their deeper meditations? When we go 'Out of Body' are we not merely rising out of linear time to be part of the One-ness that is the real Life, the Universe and Everything? Yes!

The way to live with the human notion of time is to know that it's unreal, that by developing our spiritual nature we can rise above it's limitations. We know that part of us is eternal, that time has no sway over the bit of us that matters. Let your soul live and guide you . . . it is friends with time.
